During the Renaissance period, there were significant developments in the field of cosmology, which is the study of the universe’s origins, evolution, and structure. This progress was made possible by the recovering and translation of ancient Greek and Roman texts, as well as the invention of new instruments that allowed for more accurate observations of the night sky.
One of the most important figures of this time was Nicolaus Copernicus, who proposed the heliocentric model of the universe, which places the Sun at the center and the Earth and other planets orbiting around it. This idea was a major departure from the geocentric model, which had been widely accepted since the time of Ptolemy.
Another key figure was Galileo Galilei, who made crucial observations using his newly invented telescope. His discoveries, such as the moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus, provided further evidence in support of the heliocentric model.
In addition to these individuals, the development of new mathematical tools and methods allowed for a more precise understanding of the movements of celestial bodies. This laid the groundwork for the eventual creation of the field of physics and the laws that govern the natural world.
